TESTIMONIALS To whom it may concern Mike Pavey - The Dirt 4WD In preparation for a 12month trip around Australia with a four-wheel drive and off-road van in tow, I contacted Jamie Hazelden from Dynamic Solar Solutions to get his input on solar, batteries and battery management. Jamie came highly recommended as a whiz on everything 12v and a regular guest speaker and member of the popular Camper Trailersgroup (www.campertrailers.org). The first of Jamie’s recommendations was to install a Redarc Battery Management system (BMS1215). The BMS keeps the batteries in top condition, controlling the incoming current from 240v, solar, or 12v (Anderson plug), without overcharging. Unlike normal alternator charging via the Anderson plug, the Redarc system uses a multi-stage charger to safely top up the batteries to 100%, giving much better utilisation than would otherwise be achievable (65-70% charge). Similar advancements in the solar and 240v charging systems provide the same gains. An isolator protects the vehicle battery from being drained and a state of charge display shows inputs and outputs in real time and battery reserves for each hour and day over the last 30 days. You can check out the full list of features and benefits of the Redarc BMS1215 at www.redarc.com.au. Secondly, Jamie recommended a pair of deep cycle Fullriver 105Ah batteries from R&J Batteries, leaders in recreational battery supplies. These only just fit within the battery storage compartment, maximising battery storage potential within the available space. Fullriver are very popular within the recreational market for their performance and value. As far as solar requirements, Jamie recommendedmounting a pair of PVL68 (68w) amorphous solar panels permanently to the roof of the Topaz. These light weight panels work well in low light and high temperature conditions, making them better for touring through the tropical zone. Permanently mounted and with a slim profile, they can be put to work during the day around camp, charging the batteries without fear of theft. To supplement the roof-mounted panels, Jamie suggested the purchase of an 110w portable bi-fold multi-crystalline Solawatt panel with inbuilt regulators, secured by a stainless steel cable locked to the van. Jamie added an external Clipsal T-socket to the van, plumbed directly to the batteries. The external socket is positioned close to the batteries using commercial grade cable, to minimise any losses. A 10m power cable of appropriate thickness gives a manageable length to help follow the sun. The portable panel at least provides an option to park the van in part or full shade. Finally, Jamie audited our electrics and found some issues with the way some of our other optional accessories had been wired. These were rewired appropriately. An additional 10m power lead with alligator clips was provided for our other bi-fold 80w panel used for topping up the dual battery on the car, improving on the original short and thin cable supplied. All in all, I couldn’t be happier with our new and improved electrical system, optimising self-sufficiency and current storage. With the increasing number of national parks prohibiting the use of generators, it’s good to know you can still camp under your own steam without disturbing those that come to the park to enjoy nature, without the hum of a generator. Monitoring inputs and outputs with the Redarc Battery Management System is another big advantage, whilst also supporting another great Australian company.Happy campers, you bet! I have no hesitation in recommending Jamie and the team at Dynamic Solar Solutions for any 12v requirements. MICHAEL BUTLER
PAUL BLUNDELL
I own and operate OzRoamer Camper Trailers and have worked extensively with Jamie Hazelden from Jamie's 12Volt and Solar and couldn't be happier.
TONY BELTON I found Jamie and Jason to be very helpful in understanding my particular dual battery requirements for the car fridge I purchased. I was en route to Fraser Island, having never been there before and they knew exactly what would suit my needs.
BOB AND JULIE KETTLE
My wife and I have been travelling quite extensively over the last few years in an off road camper trailer towed by a 4x4. We generally camp in national parks, state forests or free camp, where we never have access to mains power. The longest time we have not been able to purchase any sort of fresh food was one month.
